Okay Triple H, You Need To Change Your PLE Formula

The Triple H era of WWE has seen a lot of changes for the company in terms of approach and presentation, and one of those has seen a complete overhaul in the way PLEs are presented. In the past, these shows would be around three hours and featured, on average, seven or eight matches. The lengths of the shows would increase over the years, but Triple H’s era brought them back down under the four-hour mark, for the most part. However, Triple H has also brought down the number of matches on these shows… and that is no longer a good thing. Five matches and four matches are becoming commonplace, and this simply needs to stop. Triple H, it is time you change your WWE PLE formula, because it isn’t good.

The NXT TakeOver Formula Doesn’t Work On The Main Roster

Triple H Is Using The Same PLE Approach He Took In NXT

  • NXT TakeOver was all about match quality.
  • The pace of an NXT show was fast all the way through.
  • This isn’t reflected on the main roster PLEs.

When Triple H was running NXT, the NXT TakeOver events were among the most anticipated of the year in all of wrestling. These shows had a formula of around five matches, there was little breathing room in between, all matches were show-stealers and given time, and they almost always delivered. Triple H approached the WWE main roster with a similar style – fewer matches with more time handed to them… only WWE’s shows have been far from the level of the NXT TakeOver series. This is due to the fact that these PLEs are not as streamlined – there are more video packages, ads, sponsors, and sometimes even up to 20 minutes of dead time between matches with fans sitting on their hands and waiting for something to happen. WWE matches do not have that same fast-paced nature as the TakeOver shows either, to ensure the matches are worth the wait and get fans invested.

The main roster PLEs, with fewer matches, now take place at a snail’s pace. Shows drag, it is boring waiting for matches to start, and often they are not good enough to warrant making fans wait and wait and wait. Triple H’s formula doesn’t work on the main roster, but for some reason he has persisted regardless.

Six matches used to be considered a small match card, but in the Triple H era, five matches are now the norm. It isn’t ideal, but matches are given a little more time now to tell stories, so this length of card can sometimes produce the goods. However, sneaking in more and more are match cards that are now even shorter… with just four matches. Money in the Bank 2025 is the third PLE of 2025 with four matches, following on from both Royal Rumble 2025 and Elimination Chamber 2025. This is inexcusable.

WWE fans are paying a lot of money to attend shows, and for them to be given just four matches feels like a con. When there are between three and four hours of time on PLEs, having only four matches just isn’t worth the price of admission – especially since these shows often have big stars missing. When going to any WWE PLE, you should expect to see the biggest and best stars in the company, but there simply aren’t enough spots for even all of WWE’s major stars to get featured.

The WWE Roster Doesn’t Benefit From Short Match Cards

  • PLEs should feature a big range of WWE’s roster.
  • Only a handful of names get a spot on a PLE.
  • Titles sometimes go months without appearing on a major show.

Triple H’s current PLE formula isn’t just annoying for fans, but it is bad for the current roster too. Competing on PLEs can be a big deal for many, but so much of the roster misses out each and every month. When a match card has just five matches, and they’re all singles bouts, just ten members of the roster are featured – this simply isn’t enough. World titles can sometimes go multiple shows without being defended, lessening their importance, ruining title reigns, and making champions not feel like ‘champions’.

WWE Actively Hurts The Wrestling Business & Itself With Its War On AEW

WWE has announced that they’re going to hold several shows on the same weekend as AEW All In, but they’re doing more harm than good.

We aren’t saying WWE should just stack up shows with loads of wrestlers for the sake of it, but there is room for one or two more matches per show to make it feel more worthwhile for the paying audience, and to improve the pacing of these events. At times, Triple H does, in fact, book a show with six or seven matches, and the events always feel better for it. At the moment, WWE is doing a lot of things that feel as though they are purely money-driven rather than catered to pleasing the audience, and having four-match PLEs becoming more of a norm is yet another worrying example of WWE’s lessening connection with the fans.
