Charlotte Flair and Tiffany Stratton shocked fans during the April 4 episode of SmackDown when both of them went off-script. This included Stratton making fun of Charlotte’s three divorces and now Flair has finally addressed that unscripted shot at her.
While writing in the Player’s Tribune, Charlotte talked about how genuinely shaken she was when Tiffany Stratton brought up her “0–3 record at marriages” during the SmackDown promo. She hadn’t expected her personal life to be mentioned like that on live TV, and hearing the crowd cheer afterwards left her devastated.
Flair explained that whenever she’s looked rattled by boos in the past it’s often because in those moments, it hasn’t felt like the fans were booing Charlotte the character, they were booing Ashley, the real person behind the character. It’s hit her deeply at times, making her wonder if it was because of how she looks, the energy she gives off as a woman or because of the real-life trauma she’s experienced.
When the divorce comment came up in Chicago, it rattled her to the core. She admitted it was a legitimate reaction, not some calculated 5-D chess move. In her mind, Charlotte Flair had never been divorced, so it didn’t even cross her mind that it could be brought up in the story. Suddenly, she was standing there with an entire arena cheering as she got mocked for something that has been, and still is incredibly devastating for her.
“And I think in those times when people have seen me appear rattled by the booing, those are just the times when I’ve felt like — at least for a moment — the boos aren’t for Charlotte. They’re for Ashley. They’re for me. They’re because of the way I look. Or because of the energy I’m giving off as a woman. Or because of real trauma I’ve gone through in real life. So when it got mentioned in Chicago that I have an “0–3 record at marriages” … yeah, it rocked me legit. I’m not too proud to tell you that. I don’t need everyone thinking I’m playing 5-D chess all of the time. My reaction to that line was as genuine as it gets. Because — and maybe this makes me naive — in my head?? Charlotte hasn’t been divorced. So I wasn’t expecting it to come up in that promo….. and then all of a sudden I had an entire arena cheering as I got mocked for something that was (and frankly still is) devastating to me.”
Eventually, Tiffany Stratton successfully defended her WWE Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 41 and right now things between Flair and Stratton are good. Even then, Flair simply didn’t expect Stratton to personally attack her like this and it’s understandable why she was so hurt by that line now.
