WWE President Nick Khan is finally speaking out after Netflix dropped Mr. McMahon, the six-part docuseries chronicling the life—and scandals—of Vince McMahon. And when it comes to the explosive final episode, Khan didn’t sugarcoat how it rocked the company internally.
The documentary premiered on September 25 after years of delays. Originally greenlit in 2020, it was announced while Vince was still firmly in control as WWE Chairman. Since then, McMahon has faced sexual misconduct investigations, hush money scandals, a shocking return to the board, the UFC merger, lawsuits accusing him of sex trafficking and assault, and a full-on federal investigation. All of that made it into episode six—and that’s where things got uncomfortable.
Nick Khan, who didn’t join WWE full-time until after the Netflix deal was made, opened up to Bill Simmons—who executive produced the project—on The Bill Simmons Podcast. And from the sound of it, Khan wasn’t trying to spin anything.
“Episodes one through five, it was all fine. Episode six obviously had a lot of tawdry allegations in there,” Khan admitted. “The most important thing in the company was, ‘Hey, this is not for us to spike it.’ That’s not what the deal was.”
Even though the series covered some of WWE’s darkest moments, Khan said pulling the plug was never on the table.
“The deal that was struck with Netflix was prior to me joining WWE on a full-time basis,” he said. “So it was sort of trying to help everyone who was watching it stay calm, and we’ll get through this thing and get to the other side of it—which hopefully we are now.”
Khan made it clear there was no one-size-fits-all reaction from within WWE. “It went everywhere from ‘Hey, it was phenomenally done’ to ‘Oh my God, this thing is not true, it’s not factual,’” he explained. “There were people who loved it as an objectively told profile of a person, and people who were close to the subject who didn’t like it—which I would understand, and I think you understand.”
Despite the chaos behind the scenes, Khan didn’t bash the filmmakers. Instead, he kept his focus on weathering the storm inside WWE. Meanwhile, Bill Simmons said he’s proud of the final product and how it tackled one of the most powerful—and controversial—figures in wrestling history.
All six episodes of Mr. McMahon are now streaming on Netflix, but it’s episode six that’s getting all the heat—and Nick Khan knew that was coming.
Where do you stand on Nick Khan’s reaction? Was WWE right to let the docuseries air unfiltered, or should they have drawn the line somewhere? Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comment section below.
