Booker T’s commentary on NXT is usually a hot topic among fans, especially because of the sound effects he makes during Stephanie Vaquer’s matches. Some find it entertaining, while others find it distracting and now Booker T has explained why he does those sound effects for Stephanie Vaquer and how she feels about it.
While speaking to Stephanie Vaquer, Booker T was asked about Stephanie Vaquer and the “ahh ahh ahh” sound he makes when Vaquer performs one of her signature moves on television.
Booker explained that the sound isn’t about him; it’s to support Stephanie Vaquer. He said she’s really talented and doing a great job in NXT. At first, he didn’t expect her to be the breakout star. He thought it might be Giulia or Zarya, but Stephanie stepped up and impressed everyone with her wrestling and personality.
“But it’s not for me though. It’s not for me. It’s for Stephanie. It’s to shine some light on her because, man, she’s so—she’s so freaking awesome. You know what I mean? She’s such a great talent and she’s doing such a great job in NXT. I didn’t see her being the one, you know? I thought it was going to be Julia, you know, Zarya, one of those, but it seemed like Stephanie just slid in there, man. And she’s—she’s done such a great job as far as her in-ring performance as well as her entertainment value as well.”
When asked how Stephanie Vaquer reacted to the sound effects, Booker T said he thinks she liked it. She would point at him before doing it, like they were getting ready to have fun.
Booker knows some people might say he’s trying to steal her shine, but he disagrees. He shared how back when he was a young wrestler, the Spinaroonie move only became famous because commentator Mark Madden got so excited and shouted about it. Booker said he’s trying to do the same now, to help younger wrestlers get noticed and shine.
“I think she liked it because, uh, when she started doing it, she would point at me and, uh, so like, let’s get ready to, you know, have some fun, you know? And, uh, so I—I—you know, a lot of people, you know, they look at it and they go, ‘Booker T just tried to, you know, steal the shine,’ but I tell you, um, like I said when I was a young wrestler coming up, um, the Spinaroonie would not be the Spinaroonie if it wasn’t for a guy by the name of Mark Madden going crazy when I did it—’Spinaroonie, Spinaroonie, Spin!’—and then it became a household name, you know. So, for me, I’m trying to do the same thing for these young guys and these young girls coming up right now.”
Booker T’s loud and fun commentary isn’t just for show since it’s his way of helping young wrestlers like Stephanie Vaquer get more attention. Some fans like it, some don’t, but he’s doing it because he truly wants to support NXT talent. And since Vaquer is already a huge star, it seems his style is helping her in a big way.
